The events of the film take place in 1961 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The story unfolds over six weeks in the life of a doctor, Daniil Pokrovskiy, who prepares cosmonaut troops for outer space, and is tormented by his fear for the heroic men as well as by his love and pity for the two women close to his heart — his wife and his mistress.
